Biography
I have amassed more than 25 years of litigation experience handling adoption, child neglect and abuse cases, and criminal matters. I currently serve as an adoption attorney/supervisor of the Macomb County Adoption Department. I also manage my law firm, zealously representing clients.
I gained expertise in the area of adoption law both as a private attorney and while serving as attorney/supervisor for the Macomb County Adoption Department. While in private practice, I previously served as attorney/guardian-ad-litem for countless children that suffered neglect and/or abuse, and as a result, were thrust into the Michigan Child Welfare system. I have conducted numerous trials involving the termination of a parent’s parental rights. I represented numerous clients in various types of private adoption cases resulting in completed adoptions. While serving as Macomb County adoption attorney/supervisor, I have handled or supervised all nine different adoption case types. I ensured all legal requirements were satisfied and legal procedures followed for hearings involving the termination of a parent’s parental rights. For international adoptions, I ensure the filed documents comply with the laws of the child’s birth country and the United States Citizen and Immigration Services. Whenever a child is adopted from another state, I ensure compliance with the Interstate Compact for the Placement of Children, a law designed to protect children from being illegally trafficked. Of utmost importance is ensuring legal procedures are followed and hearings conducted properly in order for litigants to achieve finality with minimal or no risk of possible appeals.
I conducted adoption training for court personnel throughout Michigan with colleagues. The training covered litigation for several different types of adoptions, including direct placement, non-relative guardianship, permanent court wards, relatives, safe delivery, and stepparents.
I have an extensive history of leadership roles and volunteer work for many fine organizations. I served as defense counsel for many specialty courts, working with clients battling substance abuse and opioid addiction, including:
• Macomb County Circuit Drug Court
• Macomb County Circuit Veteran’s Court
• Macomb County Juvenile Drug Court
• 39th District Sobriety Court
I also served as president of the Macomb Community Drug Courts, Inc. (a non-profit organization), which provided resources for participants of the specialty courts. For those persons who worked hard to overcome their addiction(s), I have and continue to assist them in seeking expungements of past criminal records.
