ADOPTION SERVICES

INTERSTATE ADOPTION SERVICES in MICHIGAN
A Michigan resident(s) may adopt a child that resides in another state or U.S. territory. Interstate adoption is not a type of adoption, it is merely an adoption that involves a child being transported across state lines. The underlying adoption case type, such as direct placement, relative, permanent court ward, etc. will dictate the filing requirements.
When a child crosses state lines or U.S. territories for the purpose of adoption, the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children is triggered. The Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children is a law enacted by all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to provide for the protection and services for children placed across state lines. Michigan adopted the provisions of the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children in statutes MCL 3.711 through 3.717.
